Lake District: Things to do in May

The Lake District is one of the most popular getaway spots in the UK – and there’s no wonder why, with beautiful lakes, parks, hills and scenic walks, what’s not to love about the Lake District?

Whether you love camping, walking or just a relaxing holiday within the UK, we have put together a quick guide that covers some of our favourite things to do when the weather gets a little warmer and the stays get a little longer.

Here is John Norris’ guide to the Lake District in May…

1.   Whinlatter Tails Canicross Race

This five-mile scenic course takes place at Whinlatter, reaching the summit of Seat How while passing through popular walking trails and forest roads. If you’re an avid outdoor lover, this run is definitely not one to miss within the Lake District – so grab your best trainers and take part in a new series of Canicross Races, held in England’s only mountain forest.

Don’t get intimidated by the 1200ft of ascent, because they also offer a shorter, three-mile option for those looking for an easier run or just starting out.

2.   Cathedral Abseil & Explore

This 25-minute guided walk to Cathedral Quarry features stunning views across the Langdale Valley, sounds great, right? However, if you’re after an adrenaline rush, this activity is definitely for you as the walk is followed by the opportunity to abseil down the walls of the 150ft quarry – a memorable experience for families looking for an added kick of fun to their days out in the Lake District.

Of course, an instructor will be there to guide you and your fellow adventure lovers through all of the activities.

3.   Asics Windermere Marathon

Known as ‘the most scenic UK marathon’, the Asics Marathon features unrivalled views of Lake Windermere – a tough but rewarding race with stunning scenery and an excellent spectator support.

This marathon is one of a handful of marathons run entirely within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it allows you to take in the breath-taking views over England’s largest lake – a great one to tick off of the bucket list.

4.   Wild Deer Whinlatter Sprint Duathlon

Not for the faint hearted, but for those who truly love outdoor sports – a 5km run, 20km cycle followed by another 2.4km run, located in the beautiful Whinlatter Forest and surrounded by gorgeous scenery.

All finishers will be rewarded, of course, with a beer (or soft drink) and a medal – a well-deserved prize for one of the harder activities on our guide, but extremely fun nonetheless.

5.   Breeze Cycle Skills & Ride

Aimed at building women’s cycling confidence and teaching new skills in a safe, social and supportive environment, these cycling sessions are run by Breeze Champions, trained cycle coaches.

Their aim is to teach those who already have a beginner’s understanding and ability within cycling, but are looking to build their skills – maybe you like cycling within your neighbourhood but don’t feel ready to tackle a forest yet.

That’s it for our top events happening in the Lake District this May – the forecast seems sunny (for now) and May is a wonderful time to get as much fresh air and sun in as possible after a dark winter.

At John Norris, we love the outdoors – which is exactly why we only stock the most comfortable and high quality brands of walking gear, which you can browse in store and online.
