GORE-TEX was developed as a breathable solution to nylon clothing. Although nylon was highly waterproof, it also traps sweat inside, making the clothes damp and unpleasant to wear.
Engineers eventually adapted the waterproof properties of nylon to create GORE-TEX. Unlike nylon, GORE-TEX has millions of tiny holes in the fabric, allowing microscopic sweat vapours to escape. However, these holes are still 20,000 times smaller than a raindrop, meaning the clothing remains impressively waterproof.
