Things to do in the Lake District: September

Wondering what the best things for couples to do in the Lake District? We’ve got plenty of ideas this September. After a somewhat-disappointing summer weather-wise, the end of August and the beginning of September is looking a bit more promising, so it’s best to get outside while the weather permits.

September is a popular time for couples to pop into the Lake District as the busy school holiday times die down, allowing for a more ambient atmosphere for those looking to relax. As always, if you need any bits for your Lake District trip, head to our store in Penrith or browse our outdoor gear here.

From outdoor activities to country shows and much more, here is our September guide to the Lake District, Cumbria and Penrith…

After a highly successful year in 2022, the Westmorland County Show is back for 2 days spanning across September 13-14. The County Show will be located on the fringes of the Lake District and will be an unmissable day out – it was even voted as one of the UK’s favourite shows.

Meet the foxhounds, get close to cattle and enjoy the fantastic show jumping – just some of the many brilliant activities hosted at the County Show. Of course, it also has treats available for all foodies including artisan chocolates, cheeses, pies, gins and more.

Hutton-in-the-Forest is a historic house and garden, close to the Lake District in Cumbria and it will be hosting a fun-filled dog show for family and friends. Bring your pretty pup along and compete in up to 12 dog show classes including ‘Waggiest Tail’ and ‘Cutest Puppy’.

The Eskdale Show is an annual county show set against the stunning backdrop of the breathtaking Eskdale Fells. With a variety of activities including Sheep & Shepherd Dog Classes, this county show taking place on the 30 September is an unmissable one.

Suitable for families and friends, the show will also have stands for browsing, locally sourced produce and other exciting opportunities.

A traditional celebration of harvest, the Dalemain Harvest Festival in Cumbria will host talks, activities and guided tours to be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re joining with your family or as a gardening expert.

With a jam-packed schedule comprising traditional and special activities, you can meet Poppy the Fell Pony, browse through a selection of hand-picked nurseries and craft stalls and participate in apple juicing. There will also be a parade of vintage tractors and a visit from their renowned mascot!

That’s it for our recommendations this September! As the school holidays come to a halt, September has proven popular with couples and singles seeking a quieter time of year to truly wind down and reconnect with nature.
