Things to do in the Lake District: February

The winter weather isn’t for everyone, but keeping active even in the coldest of months is super important! If you’re after a trip to the Lake District as a family, or a couple looking to enjoy Keswick and Cumbria after the Christmas rush, we have listed activities for everyone.

We want to remind you that wrapping up warm is key, with suitable footwear and clothing recommended for everyone looking to spend some time outdoors in the Lakes. So, if you need any winter coats, jackets, boots or anything in between, pop into our Penrith store or browse all John Norris collections online.

Here are our top recommended activities in the Lake District this February…

  1. Lake District White Water Weekend 2024

With a wide range of rivers to choose from and grade to suit all abilities and experienced club paddlers delivering river safety lessons, this thrilling weekend in the Lake District is jam-packed with water activities.

In previous years, the White Water Weekenders paddled the Leven, Lune, Kent, Duddon and others, with rivers being chosen during the weekend depending on suitability for the group.

For all water lovers, this weekend is not one to miss!

  1. Forty Farms Outdoor Exhibition Trail

One for families with younger children, this outdoor exhibit is based on the award-winning book Forty Farms by Lakeland Photographer of the Year, Amy Bateman.

There are 40 large format panels alongside an accessible farm train to be discovered by family and friends including a map with a quiz for children to complete.

  1. Stargazing Night at Aira Force

Have a young one with a passion for astronomy or interested in it yourself? The astronomy experts at Aire Force are taking you on a tour of the universe on the big screen.

You can learn all about the planets, stars and galaxies and use binoculars and telescopes to search for sparkling star clusters, alongside much more.

This evening is best suited to children over the ages of 12.

  1. Snowdrop Weekends

Wrap up warm and take a winter wander through swathes of snowdrops that carpet the woodland beside Crowdundle Beck at Acorn Bank. As Acorn Bank is usually closed at this time of year, the spectacular snowdrop displays in the woodland are often only seen by the team.

Here's your chance to visit whilst they're at their most brilliant – they will be open each weekend in February.

  1. Lakeland Paws Canicross Series

For our running enthusiasts - the autumn 23/24 series of canicross races has now launched! Held in England's only mountain forest, Dodd Wood and Grizedale Forest.

The perfect location for you to enjoy stunning scenery and a fully marked course on forest roads and trails.

Whether you’re after an enthralling water sport weekend or a run across three venues with 3-5 mile options, or looking for a fun activity to take your children to this February, the Lake District is packed with everything you need and more.

Don’t forget to pick up any outdoor necessities from John Norris on your way and enjoy this winter!
