Of the four species of Grouse found in Britain, the Red and Black Grouse are the best known, although the black is no longer numerous and whilst the Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) is found in grassy woodland clearings the Red Grouse (Lagopus scoticus) inhabits heather-clad moorlands. All Grouse are short winged birds with low, whirring flight and all nest on the ground where the female is camouflaged by her dull plumage. The chicks are able to walk and feed themselves soon after hatching.
