The Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) is widely distributed across Europe and is the native English wild Trout. They live in moving waters and spawning takes place in winter usually on gravel banks. It is possibly the most important single sport species and good examples may be over eighteen inches in length. Whilst colouring may vary according to habitat, there are always dark spots on the back often with a light halo and typically a golden silvery belly.
