The Labrador Retriever was imported into England in the early 19th century from Newfoundland where it had been widely used by fishermen. Good natured, loyal and hard working, its calm temperament makes it an outstanding retrieving gundog and the Labrador's keen sense of smell enabled it to be used by the military for mine detection. The Labrador has a strong body with a wide chest, and the thick short coat is black, chocolate or yellow.
