Gun Dogs

Gun Dogs, such as Retrievers, Pointers, Spaniels and Labradors, can be really useful when you go out hunting, if you train them to do what they do best.

Books for training gun dogs can be a great way to help you get started and to make sure that you and your dog are learning the right skills and commands.

A training DVD might be better for you, so that you can learn more about gun dogs, and see gun dogs in action, to see exactly how the training works. If you learn better through watching than reading, then you might be better with a DVD explaining how to train gun dogs.

Gun dogs should never wear a collar when they are working, as they could get it caught on something, but will definitely need a collar and lead when they are not working. You'll want to make sure that you get a comfy collar and a suitable lead that is up to the job of keeping gun dogs under control.

A whistle is important for training gun dogs, and it will soon learn to obey your commands. Also, by learning to act on the whistle, it will allow your dog to work further away from you. You dog might also be working with other gun dogs out in the field.

Throwing dummies are essential for working gun dogs, as they will give the dog an idea of the size, shape and weight of the sort of things wit will be looking for and collecting for you. Why not have a selection of dummies for gun dogs so that your dog will be fetch whatever you want it to be able to?

Having feeding bowls at a raised height can make it easier for your dog to eat and drink. Working gun dogs will be thirsty when out on the field, so you'll need to make sure that you've got enough water with you.

Even working gun dogs need somewhere nice to sleep, so a comfortable dog bed will be well appreciated by your dog, especially after a hard day.

You'll want to make sure that you have everything you need to transport your dog safely and securely. Gun dogs have an important job to do once you arrive, so you'll want to make sure they're in the best shape.

In order for gun dogs to be at their best, they'll need regular grooming, especially after a muddy day out in the field.

Toys are important for all dogs, and gun dogs are no different. They'll still need to be kept entertained when they aren't working, and to be taken for walks and treated like a normal dog.
