Tuesday

The only fish caught today was 6lb, caught by one of the ladies in the group fishing, well done Liz.

Wednesday

Michael Buckman on his second cast hooked a 13lb Salmon, it was released back into the River. This Fish was caught on the Home Beat on a 1” Cascade Tube, 14ft Loop Opti Power spey rod, Hardy Demon 9000 Reel. This was the second Salmon that Michael has been lucky enough to catch, well done.

Michael Buckman also landed a 6lb Salmon using the same Fly/Rod/Reel combination on the same beat some 20 minutes later.

Thursday

I was delighted to be there to watch Edward Bennet, only 12 years old, catch his first ever Salmon, a beautiful 6lb fish. He caught it using a Golden Willie Gunn size 11 on the Downie Beat. Look at his smile, it’s so great to see young fisherman getting their first catch and hopefully getting hooked on the sport.

I couldn’t understand where a lot of my Salmon flies had disappeared to………..Ben!!!!

Little Ben Jackson thought they looked better on his new fleece than in my fly box.

Friday

Michael Buckman had a 5lb and 6lb Salmon both on a Golden Willie Gunn he was top rod for the week with 4 fish in total. Michael was very impressed with his new Guideline Dee waders they kept him dry and cool all week as the weather was very warm.

If you’re looking at fly rods, here’s what you need to think about.

1.	Why?
If your existing fly fishing rod is worn out then you may need to find a replacement. If you have been fishing for salmon but would like to start fishing for trout you may want to invest in a new rod. There are a number of reasons why you may want a new fly rod and here at John Norris you’re sure to find what you’re looking for.

2.	What for
There is a difference between trout fishing and salmon fishing, and so you’ll want to make sure that you’re using the most appropriate fishing tackle and fly rods, so that you can catch more fish.

3.	Brand
Perhaps you’ve already got a fly rod brand in mind. Here at John Norris we stock the latest fly rods from Greys, Hardy, Sage, Abu Garcia, Daiwa, Loop, Guideline, Scott Mackenzie, Shakespeare and more, so you’ll have plenty to choose.

4.	How often
How often you go fishing can help you to establish what you need. There’s no point in looking at the most advanced fly rods if you only go fishing once or twice a year. However, if you go fishing as often as you can, a basic fishing rod might not give you what you’re looking for.

5.	Budget
Although you might have a budget in mind, you’ll want to make sure that choose the right fly rod. Buying something that’s not what you want, just because it’s cheap is a false economy, and you might not use it. Spending more to get the right fly rod will mean that you’ll enjoy using it, and it will be right for the job.

6.	Entry level or experienced
Your fly rod requirements are likely to be different depending on how long you’ve been fishing for. If you’re a beginner, you probably won’t be able to appreciate the differences of a budget fishing rod compare to some of the premium models.

7.	Ease of use
You’ll want your new fly rod to be easy to use. Here at John Norris we’ll make sure you know exactly what you need to do with the rod in order for you to be able to use it.

8.	Compatibility
You’ll want to make sure that your new fly rod will work well with your existing fly fishing reel and line. Unless you’re looking for a completely new set up, you might not want to have to buy a new reel or line too.

9.	Comfort
As you’ll be spending hours at a time with your new fly rod, you’ll need to make sure that it’s comfortable in use. You might want a lightweight rod, or one that’s easy to take apart so that doesn’t take up much space in the car.

10.	Value for money
No matter what budget you have or fly rod you’re considering, you’ll want value for money. Why not see the best fly rods and other fishing tackle, and get the best prices too?

The right fishing tackle is essential if you want to catch fish. Here at John Norris we’re all experienced anglers, and know what sort of fishing tackle you should be looking at.

Here’s what you need to think about.

1.	Fishing rod
Your fishing rod is probably the most important item of fishing tackle, and so you’ll want to get it right. Whether you’re fishing in a lake, or river, or looking for a budget, or premium fishing rod, you’ll want to make sure that you get it right first time.

2.	Fishing line
Your fishing line needs to be capable of holding the fish that you’ll be catching so you should always purchase a high quality line from a leading brand.

3.	Fishing reel
Your fishing reel doesn’t have to be the most expensive, the most advanced or the lightest, but it does have to work well. If your fishing reel isn’t as good as it used to be, or you’re setting up a different rod, why not buy a new reel too?

4.	Fishing flies
The rest of your fishing tackle is useless without the right fishing flies. You’ll want to make sure that you have the right sort of flies for the fish you’re catching, where you’re fishing and the time of year. Why not have a go at fly tying too?

5.	Brands
You might already have some fishing brands in mind. Here at John Norris we stock the leading brands, including Hardy, Greys, Sage, Abu Garcia, Daiwa, Loop, Scott Mackenzie, Shakespeare fishing rods and reels, Cortland, Rio and Scientific Anglers Lines, and clothing from Barbour, Snowbee, Simms and more.

6.	Fishing clothing
Staying warm and dry is important, as you’ll be outside for a long time. If your jacket isn’t waterproof, or your hands always get cold, perhaps now is the time to buy some better fishing clothing.

7.	Fishing boots
You’ll need to make sure that you don’t slip on the wet banks, so having the right footwear is important. You might go for wellington boots, fishing boots, or waders.

8.	Fishing box
Keeping the small items of your fishing safe and well organised in a fishing box is recommended, so that you don’t lose things, and so that you always know where they are when you need them.

9.	Fishing bag
A fishing bag helps to keep your fishing tackle together, so that you’re not hunting round the house for things, or worse, likely to forget something important when you go fishing.

10.	Value for money
No matter what items of fishing tackle you need, you’ll want to get the right product at the right price. No matter whether you’re new to fishing and looking at a budget fishing reel, or an experienced angler looking for the latest high end fishing rod, you’ll want to know that you’re getting value for money. Here at John Norris, we’ve got many years experience, and fantastic products, and the knowledge to help you to buy the fishing tackle you need.

The term ‘angling’ came from Medieval England, where early fishing rods were known as ‘angles’. Today’s fishing rods are considerably more sophisticated than the ones used in those days of yore, as you might expect, and they come in a dizzying array of varieties. John Norris supplies a huge swathe of different fishing rods, from the relatively basic to the ultra-sophisticated.

An especially striking collection of fishing rods is manufactured by Orvis in its Helios range, all six of which are available from John Norris for between £599 and £629. Helios was the name given by the ancient Greeks to a handsome god who wore the sun as his crown and drove his chariot across the sky every day. NASA adopted the name for a unique lightweight wing, and now Orvis is pinning it to its state-of-the art fishing rods, which it proudly claims are the lightest fly rods in the industry.

Starting at 8ft 6inches and rising to a respectable 10 feet, the Helios series is not only the lightest set of rods ever manufactured by Orvis; surprisingly, they also happen to be the strongest the company has ever produced, too. This is largely due to the high-temperature thermoplastic resins used in their construction, which are lighter and stronger than the epoxy resins used in traditional fly rod construction. It’s a technical innovation which enables the rod to hold its shape better during bending and return to straight more swiftly. With the steeply tapered design, this affords them an amazingly snappy blank recovery, as swift as it is crisp, right through to the butt for superb casting control at both short and long ranges. The recoil guides use memory metal and the rod has nano-light rings which are 45% stronger than ceramic. This rod is so light that it makes many other comparable fishing rods feel like unwieldy broomsticks by comparison. It’s an angling delight, pure and simple.

Beginners, though, might be better advised to build up some experience before investing in a rod like this. For the novice, an excellent fishing rod comes in the form of the Greys G Series Multi Bait Rod, also available from John Norris at £59.99. Designed to be a consummate all-rounder, this fishing rod has a well-balanced, light ‘though action’ making it ideal for light spinning baits, bread flakes or worms. It comes with a double-lined butt ring and single-leg lined intermediates and has a medium action to cover a broad range of fishing techniques. A superb rod for the rambling bait angler on holiday!
