Which Waders? and Wader Care

Waders are waterproof boots extending from the foot to the chest, sometimes referred to as Chest Waders for emphasis. Waders are available with boots attached or can have waterproof stocking feet to wear inside your own wellies.

Fishing waders are a definite must if you are serious about catching fish as they allow the angler to wade into the water so they can cast further into deeper water without getting wet.

When buying waders you should really consider the maximum water depth you'll be using them in. Then it is also a good idea to add 8 inches or so (or about a foot for flowing water), as getting water in your waders is no fun and can ruin a great day of fly fishing!

"Stocking foot" waders have neoprene "feet" and are designed to be worn inside special wading boots. These "wading boots" offer fantastic ankle support and foothold. The neoprene waders provide insulation against the cold and padding in case of a slip, they also are puncture resistant. Gore-tex and Breathable waders offer greater comfort, freedom of movement and breathability.

The seams of waders regardless of type are sealed to stop any water getting in between the fabric panels. Over time these seals can wear down so it is a good idea to inspect your waders before each use to save you from getting wet!

When taking care of your waders always consider the following:

  • Make sure you hang your waders out to dry overnight after you have used them. This will lengthen their life, plus you won’t have to get back into an uncomfortable wet/damp pair the next morning.
  • It’s definitely a good idea to inspect your waders before you head to the river to make sure there are no weak spots, punctures or holes that will make them take on water.
  • Ensure your waders are completely dry before you hang them up and try to store them in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.

John Norris has a complete range of waders including; chest waders, breathable waders, thigh waders, bootfoot and stockingfoot waders.

When choosing a pair of waders, it is important to try them on with all the fishing gear that you would normally have on underneath them. Different materials (neoprene or goretex) will also feel different, so you may want to try on a variety of types before making your final decision. John Norris staff are highly knowledgeable and always happy to help you with your selection of the right waders.
