A new fly line is defined by three characteristics: -

  • Weight – when referring to a new fly line describes the actual weight in grains of the first 30 ft of the new fly line and it is worth noting that new fly line weights vary from 1 weight to 15 weight
  • Buoyancy – when referring to a new fly line refers to the buoyancy characteristic that describe how the fly line will behave on the water after being cast, this is explained further below.

Types of new fly line

There are three main types of new fly line here on the John Norris site: -

  • Floating
  • Sinking
  • Sink tip

A floating fly line is designed to float on top of the water, a sinking fly line is designed to sink below the water and when a sink tip fly line is cast, only the tip of the line sinks below the water, the rest floats on top of the water.

The type of new fly line you use will be down to personal preference but if you are ever unsure please feel free to pop into our store or calls us on 01768 864211 as we will be happy to give you some advice.
