Make your Fly Reel Last Longer

To make your fly reel last longer ensure you follow these simple tips:

  • Try not to knock the fly reel against rocks, boat decks, hard floors etc. Small scratches and dents expose bare metal which will corrode.
  • If fishing on a boat always place the fishing rod butt (and hence the fly reel) on a damp cloth, so it will not slide around or get scratched.
  • Never drop the fly reel in sand as sand grains are very harsh and can scratch the inner housing, damage drag disks and even the ball bearings inside your fly reel.
  • As soon as you have finished fishing for the day, rinse the fly reel under a low pressure tap. Remove the spool, shake off excess water and make sure you leave it to dry before reassembling. fly reels shouldn’t be left to soak for a long time as water can often penetrate the ball bearings and case corrosion.
Make sure you always apply new grease and lubricate your fly reel according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • It is always best to stow the fly reel empty. Backing may be left on the fly reel, provided it is completely desalinated (in the case of saltwater fishing) and dry.
  • Always loosen the drag completely when the fly reel is not in use.
  • Fine leather fly reel pouches lined with sheepskin are not suited for saltwater use. They trap salty moisture and cannot be washed. Like with fishing rods, it is not advisable put a wet fly reel in its pouch, especially after a saltwater fishing trip. If the pouch gets wet, it should be washed and desalinated.
