John Norris understands that choosing a fly reel can be as complicated as choosing a fishing rod, and so you'll want to make sure that you get the one that best meets your needs, in order to avoid an expensive mistake.
Your fly reel is as important as your fishing rod itself, and so you'll want to make sure that you know what sort of things to look for. If you're not sure, why not ask a member of our John Norris staff who would be happy to help, a more experienced angler, or someone at your local fishing club? They're bound to be able to offer you the advice you need.
Fly reels are designed for either salmon or trout, and have different types of action. Having a separate salmon fishing rod and trout fishing rod is a must if you are a serious angler.
Some anglers like to have a lightweight reel in order to keep the weight down. Others say that it upsets the balance of the rod, and will want a heavier reel. If you're not sure what you like, then you'll need to try several different fly reels to see which is right for you. You might also need new fly fishing lines to go with your new fly reel, especially if you're setting up a dedicated salmon or trout fishing rod.
Keeping your fly reel in a fishing reel bag is a good idea, so that your reels don’t get damaged at home, in the car, or on the riverbank. You'll also be able to keep them clean and well maintained so that they work as they should do.
If you're an experienced angler, you might already have a few brands or models of fly reel on your shortlist. Alternatively you might be keeping an open mind, or maybe you just want to get the most appropriate reel, no matter what brand it is. Sometimes the most expensive or best reel won't be right for you, and sometimes the cheapest reel will be just what you need.
Although you may have a budget in mind, you won't want to limit yourself, and get a fly reel that you're not going to enjoy using. Value for money will be important, and so spending more on a better or more suitable reel makes more sense than choosing a cheap reel that isn’t what you want.
