Fly Lines from John Norris

Fly lines are a very important part of fly fishing. The fly lines are what are cast since the fly is practically weightless.

Fly lines come in a wide range of forms. They may be of different diameters, contain tapered parts, or be of a level (even) diameter. Fly lines may float, sink, or have a floating section with a sinking tip. A modern fly line generally is made up of a tough braided or monofilament core, this is wrapped in a thick plastic sheath. When looking at floating fly lines, the plastic sheath is usually embedded with many tiny air bubbles to give buoyancy and silicone to reduce wear. Fly lines also come in a range of different models for fresh water, salt water, cold or tropical temperatures.

Tapering of the tip section is definitely a consideration when purchasing fly lines. A heavier taper at the tip of fly lines, usually called a ‘weight forward line’, loads the fly rod quicker and makes casting much easier for beginner anglers.

In order to fill up the fly reel spool and ensure a good reserve of fly line in case of a long run by a powerful or fast fish, fly lines are generally attached to a secondary line at the lower section, called backing. Backing for fly lines varies in length depending on the type of fish an angler is after, from as little as 75 yards for smaller freshwater fish up to 300-400 yards for larger saltwater species.

At John Norris we pride ourselves on supplying the best fly lines for all types of fishing rods. We also sell backing for fly lines at John Norris.
