Fly Fishing Line

When it comes to purchasing a fly fishing line it can be difficult to know where to start so here at John Norris we thought we would offer you a bit of advice.

For those of you who don’t know a fly fishing line is a specific type of fishing line that is used in fly fishing and it is used to supply a weight necessary to cast an artificial fly with a fly rod.

Depending on what type of fish you wish to catch will determine the type of fly fishing line you need to buy.

When fishing for trout we would suggest purchasing a Cortland fly fishing line and here on the John Norris site you have a number of different ones to choose from: -

Cortland 444 Classic - 10' Sink Tip (90') Fly Fishing Line - this fly fishing line offers the same features as the 444 Classic fly fishing line but has the added benefit of an integral 10 foot type 3 sinking tip.

Cortland 444 Classic Floating (90') Fly Fishing Line - this fly fishing line is described as extremely supple in the hand, fast through the guides and offers high floating.

Cortland 444 XP Classic - Intermediate Type 1 (105') Fly Fishing Line - this fly fishing line is described as a truly stunning line in every way offering all the right characteristics to suit the UK angler.

Cortland 444 Classic Sylk - Floating (90') Fly Fishing Line - this fly fishing line has been designed to work well with fine bamboo or carbon rods. The "sylk" of this fly fishing line replicates the fine diameter, long taper of natural silk as well as the supple feel and subtle colour, but in a modern, easy to care for fly fishing line.

A Brief History of the Fly Fishing Line

You may not know that many years ago a fly fishing line would have been made from woven horse hair which was followed by fly fishing lines being made from woven silk fibres. Today synthetic materials have replaced natural materials so a fly fishing line would be constructed of an outside synthetic layer.
