As the name suggests, floating fly lines are designed to float on top of the water when you're fishing. Other types of fly lines include; sink tip fly lines, fly lines where means some of the fly line sinks while the rest floats on top of the water and sinking fly lines, where the fly lines are designed to sink along the entire length of fly line.

As you probably already know, fly lines are made from a tough braided core and are wrapped in a thick waterproof plastic sheath. When it comes to floating fly lines the sheath is usually sheath imbedded with many air bubbles and is often impregnated with silicone to give buoyancy and reduce wear.
