What are fly lines?

For those of you who don’t know, an angler will cast fly lines when fly fishing with the fly attached to the end. Fly lines are required as the flies used in fly fishing are practically weightless.

Types of fly lines

There are many different types of fly lines you can purchase and the type you go for will be down to personal preference but it is worth knowing that fly lines are usually defined by three characteristics; Taper, Weight and Buoyancy.

The term taper, when referring to fly lines, refers to the change in cross-sectional diameter of a fly line from one end to another.

The term weight, when referring to fly lines, describes the actual weight in grains of the first 30ft of the fly lines.

The term Buoyancy, when referring to fly lines, described how the fly lines will behave in the water once they have been cast.
